Former Tennessee Vols QB Joe Milton already deserves a new jersey number with the New England Patriots
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots announced jersey numbers for their rookies on Friday morning and former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton might already need to make a switch.

Milton, who was a sixth round pick by the Patriots in last month's draft, was assigned No. 19 by New England.

Outside of Johnny Unitas, who wore No. 19 over 50 years ago, and Kansas City Chiefs-era Joe Montana, 19 is a number that's been mostly reserved for wide receivers in recent decades.

It just looks....odd (no pun intended) on a quarterback these days.

Maybe Milton can trade his No. 19 jersey to Patriots wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who currently wears No. 7 (the number Milton wore at Tennessee and in high school).

Smith-Schuster previously wore No. 19 when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

No. 1 and No. 18 are also numbers that aren't currently being used by a Patriots player.

No. 12 is also available, but I have a feeling the Patriots might have other plans for that number.

The good news for Milton is that rookies sometimes get stuck with random numbers during OTAs and minicamps before getting their "real" number down the road. Perhaps that will be the scenario that unfolds for Milton in New England.
