Derek Carr receives comparison to former Saints star

Saints QB Derek Carr reminds his new teammates of a former New Orleans star.

"He's giving me more of a feel — because he's an older guy — he's giving me a lot of Drew [Brees]," Saints tight end Juwan Johnson recently said, per SiriusXM NFL Radio. "Going into the huddle, commanding the huddle, guys gravitating toward him — these are things [I saw from] how Drew conducted the offense and things like that."

The Saints have shuffled through five starting QBs since Brees, a Super Bowl champion and two-time Offensive Player of The Year, retired in 2020. They've also missed the playoffs for consecutive seasons.

Although Carr — who the Raiders released in February — isn't on the same tier as a potential Hall of Famer, he could provide the stability New Orleans covets. He's made four Pro Bowls in nine seasons and has thrown the ninth-most TDs among active QBs (217).

New Orleans Pro Bowl defensive tackle Cameron Jordan has so much confidence in Carr's ability to revive the franchise that he recently said, "I expect the Super Bowl," during a Sirius XM NFL Radio appearance.

While a championship next season is unlikely because the Saints are rebuilding after a 7-10 season, making the playoffs is a reasonable goal. Per OddsChecker, the Saints hold the best NFC South title odds.

Plus, the offense could become a high-powered unit if Carr meets expectations. It includes WR Chris Olave, WR Michael Thomas, RB Alvin Kamara and RB Jamaal Williams, who led the league in rushing TDs (17) last season.

Carr could be in a great position to redirect his career after his tenure in Las Vegas and give the Saints the solid QB they need.
